If a move is on the cards for you, it is best to declutter your home before you even start to pack. Why pay hard earned money to cart stuff around you haven’t used for a long time, and, to be honest, probably never will use? Baxton Property Management in Hobart have seen many tenants come and go, and they know that de-cluttering is essential.
The earlier you start the better. Allow at least a month before your move to give you ample time to go through your entire home. Then try to work systematically.
Most people have a problem throwing anything out, as they always think they might need it again one day. That day never comes. If you haven’t used something in six months, chances are you won’t miss it. To be sentimental about things is fine, but how many of those things you are sentimental about actually hold good memories? Don’t hang on to stuff that causes you pain. Move on.
The three best ways to deal with clutter are to donate, throw out or sell the unused items that have been building up in your cupboards ever since you last moved.
Arm yourself with a box for donations, a trash bag for dumping stuff, and a pen and paper to list those things that you feel you could sell. Start with a drawer, or a shelf in a cupboard, or a particular category of items, like books, CDs or collections, and work through them one at a time so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
Stuff to throw out is anything that is stained, torn, or broken. Don’t even think about it. No one can use it, so just toss it out. Donations could include books, clothes, CD’s and DVD’s, children’s toys and kitchen appliances. Things to sell would be larger items that are still in a good condition, such as TV’s, couches or electronics.
Don’t even consider moving items that are still in boxes from your previous move. Chances are those boxes won’t be unpacked in your new home either, as it is clear they were not needed at any time during your current stay. Throw them out.
Items of worth can be sold on-line on sites like e-Bay, or posted on Facebook. List items on an appropriate What’s App group, or chat to your friends. It is sometimes less risky to sell to friends than to strangers.
Never look at an item twice. Decide if you need it, or if you don’t. If you haven’t worn an item in a year because it doesn’t fit anymore, chances are you won’t ever wear it. We can hang onto items, and wait for them to become fashionable again some decades later, but in the meantime it clutters our wardrobes. And when the style does eventually come back into fashion, the fabric or colour will be different, so it still won’t fit the trend.
Donate clothes in a good condition to a charity of your choice. You can pack the boxes yourself and drop them off, but some charities will even collect the boxes from your home.
When your moving day comes, you will be so happy if your load is half of what it would have been, and you can spend the money you saved on buying new things for your new home.
