Clever Uses for Ice Cube Trays
Ice trays are just for making ice, right? Well, that’s up to you! Discover some clever, fun uses for ice trays you never thought of before. From culinary delights to summer refreshments for those hotter days, you’re about to look at the mundane ice tray in a new light!
Freeze fresh herbs
You can freeze just about any fresh herbs with a little olive oil in an ice tray, but it works better with the harder-leafed herbs like time and rosemary. Having said that, you can easily blanch softer herbs for freezing and then add them to your ice cubes. Pop an ice cube into your cooking, and you get those fresh herb flavours that set your cookery apart.
Save neat portions of tomato paste
What’s to be done with the left-over tomato paste? Leave it in the can, and it goes all yukky and suspicious-looking. And what about your home-cooked tomato sauce? You’re not likely to use a whole freezer container full at one go. Portion it up into ice cube trays. When they’re frozen, you can pop your tomato cubes into a zip-lock bag. Use as many as you need at any time, and return the rest to the freezer.
Iced tea or coffee ice cubes
Although Hobart has a lovely maritime climate, there’ll still be days when iced coffee or iced tea are just what you need to refresh yourself. Why add water-ice and dilute your drinks? Instead, add coffee or tea ice cubes. By the way, your left over, frozen filter coffee ice cubes are a great basis for a refreshing drink when whipped up in milk with a little extra cream.
Frozen lemon juice
If you’ve bought too many lemons or have a tree that carries all its lemons at once, don’t let them go to waste. There are a hundred and one uses for lemon juice in cookery, and lemon juice ice cubes give you easy access to the tanginess of citrus when you want it. Or simply pop lemon juice ice cubes into a glass of water for a rehydrating summer drink.
Freeze leftover wine
That last bit of wine you didn’t finish is perfect for cooking – but if left to itself for too long, it can just as easily turn into vinegar. Plus, the bottle clutters up your kitchen. Solve the problem by freezing red or white wine in ice cube trays. Now, if you want to add the gourmet touch to your cookery, it’s just a matter of adding an ice cube or two.
Make and keep your own frozen stock cubes
Store-bought stock cubes would make any chef who is serious about cooking shudder. Besides, everyone uses the popular brands, and you want your cooking to be distinctive. Top chefs will have a stock pot on the go all the time – but in the home kitchen, that’s not possible. No problem. Make your own stock and use your ice cube tray to make your own stock cubes.
Make mini ice pops
Freeze just about anything tasty: yoghurt, fruit juice, or a combination of fruit juice and fresh fruit to make mini ice pops your family will love. Add a stick before they freeze to complete the mini-ice-pop analogy.
No, you cannot freeze whole eggs. But you can still keep eggs fresh in the freezer with the help of your trusty ice cube trays. Beat them up and pour them in. Any time you need fresh eggs, pop out an egg ice cube.
Garnish drinks with frozen foliage and flowers
Freeze edible flowers like bergamot, pansies, dandelions or violas in water to add an extra touch of class to summer cocktails and cold drinks. You can also freeze sprigs of mint, some slivers of lemon – or pop in a few blueberries. It’s great for making special occasions feel even more special, and it doesn’t cost a cent.
Use them as sushi moulds or to make choccie strawberries
Just because it’s an ice tray doesn’t mean it necessarily belongs in the freezer. You can use ice trays as moulds for anything – including sushi. It may not be traditional, but the result is much the same. The same goes for chocolate-covered strawberries. All you need is an ice tray, some strawbs and melted chocolate. Yum!
